You’re probably wondering what Reformer Pilates is
Pilates founder Joseph Pilates invented the reformer. As you can see from the pictures, it is a bed-like frame with a platform called a carriage, which moves back and forth.
At first glance, the Reformer equipment can look intimidating or even scary. It makes a dramatic impression when you first see one, but more importantly, it dramatically changes your body when you use it. There is no reason to fear the reformer, especially if you know what to expect before you attempt your first session.
The carriage moves, and so will you; lying on your back on a moving platform can feel disorienting, and you will be surprised how quickly you get used to it; like most things, the more you use the equipment, the more comfortable you will feel.
Exercises can be done lying down, sitting, standing, pulling the straps, or pushing the foot bar. A wide variety of exercises on the reformer promote length, strength, flexibility, and balance.
Key Benefits of Reformer Pilates
Easy on the Joints
Relief from Back Pain
High Intensity, Low Impact
Offers a full-body workout
Increases Strength
Improves Mental Health
Helps Improve Flexibility
Improves Your Posture
Coordination and Balance
The reformer offers all the benefits of Pilates, including overall strength, flexibility, coordination, and balance. These things, in turn, lead to daily life improvements like better posture, efficient movement, and for many, relief from the pain associated with physical imbalances such as back pain.
High Intensity,
Low Impact
The use of springs, straps and the carriage in a Pilates Reformer class makes it a low-impact fitness option, perfect for treating an injury. Lying on the carriage keeps the range of movements on a horizontal plane, taking any pressure off weak or damaged knees and ankles.
The low-impact nature also means you can do it multiple times a week, and this consistency is vital to seeing long-lasting health benefits.
“You will feel better in ten sessions, look better in twenty sessions, and have a completely new body in thirty sessions.”
— Joseph Pilates
